Septic Shock is one of the most devastating medical conditions affecting a patient. It creates an onslaught of life-threatening derangement in a patient’s body. It occurs in the face of a body-wide infection. Massive vasodilation occurs in the presence of this infection, resulting in extremely low blood pressure. This loss of vasomotor tone affects the organs as they cannot be perfused adequately, leading to end-organ failure.
Septic shock protocols must be instituted as soon as the diagnosis is made. Mortality is considerably reduced if appropriate therapy is initiated within 6 hours of diagnosis. Most hospitals have sepsis protocols in place. Fluid resuscitation is key. If fluid resuscitation fails vasopressor therapy must be instituted. Antibiotic therapy should be instituted early in the course of the sepsis. Glucose levels must be optimized with insulin therapy where appropriate.
New studies are underway to look at alternative therapies other than the traditional ones listed. Researchers are now looking to Vitamin C and steroids as possible treatments to septic shock. Theory behind this treatment plan revolves around stabilizing cell membranes and boosting catecholamine levels to overcome the vasodilatory response to sepsis and in turn reduce the amount of end organ derangement.
